Dear colleagues,

The 7th biannual  European-Mediterranean (EUROMED)  conference brings together researchers, policy makers, professionals, fellows and practitioners to explore some of the more pressing issues concerning Cultural Heritage today. In particular, the main goal of the conference is to focus on interdisciplinary and multi-disciplinary research on tangible and intangible Cultural Heritage, using cutting edge technologies for the protection, restoration, preservation, massive digitalization, documentation and presentation of the Cultural Heritage contents. At the same time, the event is intended to cover topics of research ready for exploitation, demonstrating the acceptability of new sustainable approaches and new technologies by the user community, owners, managers and conservators of our cultural patrimony.

Topics and themes:

Researchers and practitioners willing to participate to the EUROMED 2018 conference are invited to submit papers on original works addressing the following subjects and research themes:

  1. i) DIGITAL HERITAGE DOCUMENTATION and PRESERVATION
  2. ii) PROTECTION, RESTORATION AND PRESERVATION OF TANGIBLE AND INTANGIBLE CULTURAL HERITAGE

More detail information regarding the themes can be found at: http://www.euromed2018.eu/index.php/call-participation

Submission of Papers:

Submissions for the event are completely electronic through the on-line submission website available at http://www.euromed2018.eu/index.php/paper-submission

The conference accepts only original, unpublished work written in English which will be blind-reviewed and published on SPRINGER-NATURE LNCS.

We are soliciting three types of contributions:

  1. Full research papers: they present new innovative research developments and results. They will feature a full-length oral presentation and will be published in a high-quality proceedings volume. Each submitted paper must not exceed 12 pages in total.
  2. Project papers: they focus on the description of project organization, use of technology and lessons learned. They will feature a short oral presentation and will be published in a high-quality proceedings volume. Each submitted paper must not exceed 10 pages in total.
  3. Short papers: they present preliminary ideas and works-in-progress. These papers will have a short oral presentation and will be also available also as posters in conference breaks. Each short paper must not exceed 8 pages in total.

The 20 best submitted papers will be published on a special issue of upcoming International Journal Heritage in the Digital Era.

Important Date for Paper submission: 31st of May, 2018 (24:00 London-UK time) → http://www.euromed2018.eu/index.php/important-dates

Europeana Task Force Group: International Survey on Advanced documentation of 3D Digital Cultural Heritage Assets

Europeana Task Force Group: International Survey on Advanced documentation of 3D Digital Cultural Heritage Assets

Dear Colleague,

The e-documentation of Cultural Heritage (CH) assets is inherently a multimedia process and a great challenge, addressed through digital representation of the shape, appearance and conservation condition of the heritage/cultural object for which 3D digital model is expected to become the representation. 3D reconstructions should progress beyond current levels to provide the necessary semantic information (knowledge/story) for in-depth studies and use by researchers, and creative users, offering new perspectives and understandings. Digital surrogates can add a laboratory dimension to on-site explorations originating new avenues in the way tangible cultural heritage is addressed.

The generation of high quality 3D models is still very demanding, time-consuming and expensive, not at least because the modelling is carried out for individual objects rather than for entire collections and formats provided in digital reconstructions/representations are frequently not interoperable and therefore cannot be easily accessed and/or re-used or preserved.

This 15-20 minutes long survey aims to gather your advice concerning the current and future e-documentation of 3D CH objects. We would appreciate your taking the time to complete it. Your responses are voluntary and will be confidential. Responses will not be identified by individual. All responses will be compiled together and analyzed as a group. The results of this survey will be published before the end of this year on the channels of Europeana Profesional (pro.europeana.eu), CIPA (Comité International de Photogrammétrie Architecturale – http://cipa.icomos.org/), Digital Heritage Research Lab (http://digitalheritagelab.eu/dhrlab/lab-overview/) and Digitale Rekonstruktion (http://www.digitale-rekonstruktion.info/uber-uns/).

Europeana Task Force Group: International Survey on Advanced documentation of 3D Digital Cultural Heritage Assets

Join the Group of Experts for the creation of the EU H2020 Manifesto on Digital Heritage and Virtual Museums

Dear colleague,

Register on our platform and join the Group of Experts: www.vi-mm.eu

Virtual Multimodal Museum (ViMM – www.vi-mm.eu) is a high-visibility and participative Coordination and Support Action (CSA), funded under the EU Horizon 2020 programme (CULT-COOP-8-2016). ViMM brings together Europe and the world’s leading public and private sector organisations working on Virtual Museums and in the wide sector of Digital Cultural Heritage (DCH) to support high quality policy development, decision making and the use of technical advances. The partner consortium (see below) will be supported by an expert Advisory Group in building the ViMM Framework, involving decision-makers and practitioners in defining and resolving issues spread across 7 interlinked Thematic Areas (‘the 7 Ds’): Definitions, Directions, Documentation, Dimensions, Demand, Discovery and Decisions.

Major results will include, a highly interactive and wide-reaching ViMM communication platform which will:

  • enable focused contributions and discussion by everyone interested
  • represent excellence in Virtual Museums and DCH
  • provide a decision-support tool for stakeholders
  • Key events at policy and practitioner/ stakeholder levels and extensive use of the media
  • A clearer, evidence-based view of the impact of Virtual Museums and Digital Cultural Heritage on society and the economy

The final result of the project will be the EU H2020 Manifesto and Roadmap for Action on DCH, which will be validated at the final ViMM international conference in 2019.
